Eyes Are on Facebook's First Earnings Report

After a disappointing Wall Street debut, all eyes will be on Facebook on Thursday when it makes its first quarterly earnings report as a public company.
The world's largest social network is under a lot of pressure to show strong numbers and, more importantly, to show that the company has strong business potential. Shareholders and Wall Street will be paying particular attention to this first earnings report since Facebook's initial public offering didn't go quite as planned.
When the company went public in May, the stock was first offered at $38 per share and was expected to shoot up to $50, $60 or even $90 per share. The stock didn't meet those expectations, and didn't hold its opening price.
At noon today, Facebook's stock was trading at $28.64 a share on the Nasdaq.

Meanwhile, two studies were released last week that weren't good news for Facebook. First, a report from the American Customer Satisfaction Index showed that Facebook's user satisfaction had dropped 8% over the last year to 61 on a 100-point scale.
The study also found that Facebook had the lowest score for a social network, and that the number was a record-low score for the social media category.
Then the next day, a report from Capstone Investments found that Facebook was losing users in the U.S. and other major markets.
"Facebook's first earnings call is extremely important for them," said Karsten Weide, an analyst with IDC. "Their advertising sales growth has slowed dramatically in recent quarters, more than it should have for a company with Facebook's supposed promise. They will have to prove they can turn this around and accelerate growth again."
Weide said she expects Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, along with executives from sales and advertising, to speak during the earnings call, which is scheduled for 5 p.m. EST.
"If they have good news on revenue growth, the stock price will go back up to perhaps $32, otherwise it may tank, down to $26 or even less," Weide said.
Jordan Rohan, a financial analyst with Stifel, Nicolaus & Company Inc., said it's possible that Facebook's sagging stock price will rise after the earnings call, despite some expected good and bad numbers.
"We believe shares are likely to recover when we see a reacceleration of revenue growth above the 30% rate, with some expansion in margins, but the 2Q report is not likely to inspire," wrote Rohan in a financial report, noting that he expects Facebook's earnings to come in slightly above Wall Street expectations. "While audience and product milestones are impressive, investors expect significant earnings upside, which is unlikely."
Nate Elliott, an analyst with Forrester, also anticipates that Facebook will show some positive numbers.
"I expect we're going to see really positive ad revenues from Facebook this week," he said. "The natural momentum of being a cultural phenomenon, plus the added momentum of going public, will surely have brought more marketers to the site, money in hand. And not many marketers are asking yet what business value they're getting from Facebook. Most are still content to simply count fans and likes."
Elliott added, though, that marketers and advertisers will begin to want proof of value, Facebook will need to prepare to prove its business value.

5 Things Windows 8 Can Learn from OS X Mountain Lion

Apple's newest iteration of its OS has some great features we'd like to see in Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8. Here's our list.

OS X Mountain Lion versus Windows 8Apple's OS X Mountain Lion will launch Wednesday, so it's a good time for Windows users to peer across the border at what features in Mountain Lion might prove useful.
Note that Windows 8 is a complete overhaul, while Mountain Lion is more of a refinement. Yet the Apple update adds lots of new features that would fit in nicely on Microsoft's OS. In hopes of keeping alive the tradition of stolen OS features, here are five aspects of OS X Mountain Lion that we'd like to see in future versions of Windows.

Notification Center

Notification Center in OS X Moutain LionNotification Center in OS X Moutain LionWindows 8 will have pop-up notifications that slide onto the top-right corner of the screen, which are useful for noticing new messages, calendar appointments, or other important updates.
But Windows 8's notification system is still missing a list view for all the updates you might have missed, similar to Notification Center in Mountain Lion. This would be especially helpful if you didn't want pop-ups to interrupt your work, but still want to glance at a list view of notifications periodically.

AirPlay Mirroring

Microsoft knows that PC-to-TV connectivity is going to be huge, which is why the company will release a SmartGlass app that lets tablets send content to Microsoft's Xbox 360. Still, we know very little about how this app will work.
Meanwhile, OS X Mountain Lion will allow full AirPlay mirroring to Apple TV boxes. It'd be nice to have similar mirroring capabilities between Windows 8 PCs and the Xbox.

Text Messaging

Although Mountain Lion users won't be able to send and receive all their text messages on the Mac, they will have access to all iMessages, which come from other iOS and Mac users.
Microsoft could offer even deeper message syncing between Windows Phones and PCs, so users wouldn't have to answer messages on a tiny screen when they're at a full-sized computer.

Synced Notes and Reminders

The Windows Store will likely offer several third-party notes and reminders apps that can sync data across devices.
With Mountain Lion, these features are built in, so your notes and reminders are automatically available on any Apple device. Sure, Microsoft has a more advanced note-taking product in OneNote, but a more simple--and free--solution as part of Windows 8 would be helpful.

Easier Voice Dictation

In Windows 8, voice dictation is available as an accessibility feature, and as such, it's buried behind several menus and not intended for general use.

BitTorrent Looks to Share Some Revenue With Artists

BitTorrent The file-sharing company BitTorrent has begun testing an advertising model through which it would share ad revenue with content producers whose work is downloaded through the service, promising a way for artists to monetize informal sharing of their digital content.
BitTorrent is launching the revenue model through a pilot program using a selection of songs by hip-hop artist DJ Shadow. The music is promoted visibly on the website. When users download it, they can also opt in to download one of several free applications, such as the RealPlayer video player. Each time a user downloads an app, the software vendor will pay BitTorrent an advertising fee, which BitTorrent will share with DJ Shadow, BitTorrent said on Tuesday.
BitTorrent sees the revenue-sharing model as "a potentially sustainable way for all artists to monetize BitTorrent," it said in a statement. BitTorrent claims to have 150 million monthly active users and says the file-sharing protocol it pioneered drives more than one-fifth of all global Internet traffic.
BitTorrent, like other file-sharing services, is often thought of as a hub for illegal sharing of copyrighted material. The entertainment industry says that practice unjustly deprives artists of the proceeds of their work. But some BitTorrent users share files that are not protected by copyright.
The company did not immediately make anyone available for an interview.
BitTorrent has in the past made arrangements with artists to feature their work on the site. It claimed that such promotional efforts delivered "ancillary revenue" to artists even though no revenue was shared. For example, featured artists may have seen ramped-up concert ticket sales as a result of the promotion.
Rebecca Lieb, an analyst with Altimeter Group, saw the move as an effort to develop more revenue streams. BitTorrent already features display advertising, but the program announced Tuesday would lead it additionally into content promotion, Lieb said. It's likely BitTorrent will charge artists and their marketers to feature their content in addition to sharing the resulting ad revenue, she said.
"The music business is a tough business. People will do a lot to gain visibility. It's not easy to be widely visible in iTunes, just as it wasn't easy to get a floor display in Tower Records 20 years ago if you were an unknown," she said.
BitTorrent's initiative, she said, "is a really interesting model to disrupt digital music and media distribution methods."
But is the move an effort by BitTorrent to distance itself from the unsavory world of file-sharing, which has been in the public eye during the ongoing Megaupload case?

Publisher's Description

This is a popular mod for GTA III that updatesLiberty City to look even more like an average American city. Included are new cars, new weapons, buildings, bridges, and even the Statue of Liberty. Each car has been redesigned and some familiar businesses have taken up shop in Liberty City. Weapons are stronger, trees have been replaced, new bridges have been added and previously closed areas are now open to exploration. Created as a mixture of all the best GTA III mods, this one is sure to please.
RealGTA3 (=RGTA) is free add-on for Grand Theft Auto 3. RGTA is not a product of Rockstar Games or Take 2 Games, RGTA is ultimate collection of many GTA3 modifications made by independent authors from the whole world, trying to make GTA3 more realistic by adding real cars, buildings or advertisements all over Liberty City. List of all changes is below!
New Cars. All cars have been changed for new ones--each one with unique handling, colors, and wheels. Sportcars: Lamborghini Murcielago and Diablo VT6.0; Porsche Carrera GT; Opel Speedster; Dodge Viper GTS; Ferrari F355; BMW Z8; Plymouth Prowler; Mercedes-Benz SL500; Aston Martin Vanquish V12. Sedans: Lexus LS430; BMW 760Li; Mercedes-Benz C200; Land Rover Freelander; BMW M3; Skoda Octavia; VW Passat; Mitsubishi Galant; MINI Cooper S; Big/worker cars: Mercedes-Benz Actros; Orange Flatbed; Kamaz 55111; new Trashmaster; Securicar; Coca Cola Truck; Chevrolet S-10; City Bus. Public services: new Ambulance; new Fire Truck; Police Ford Crown Victoria; T-80; SWAT Van (new Enforcer); FBI BMW M5; Army Truck (new Barracks OL); Peugeot 406 Taxi; Ford Crown Victoria Taxi; Mercedes-Benz A-Class Taxi. Special cars: Sarin XTV; RC Peugeot 205; Monster Truck; F-16; Hummer; new Train; Family Frost Van (new Mr.Whoopee); Toyz; Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Gang cars: Cartel Jeep Grand Cherokee; Diablos Ford Mustang GT (Concept 2005); Hoods Seat Leon Cupra R; Triad Mercedes-Benz Actros; Mafia Audi S8; Laundry Mercedes-Benz Sprinter; Panlantic Mercedes-Benz Sprinter; Yakuza Toyota Supra Veilside; Yardie Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
New Weapons. RGTA includes brand new weapons: crowbar, Desert Eagle, uzi KG-9, shotgun, Battle 7, MP5, Sig551, rocket launcher M79, sniper Rifle PSG-1, L2A2 grenades, new molotov, and flamethrower model. The weapons are more effective (by 50 percent on average), so now it's really dangerous to hang in the area of hostile gangs! You need only few bullets from any weapons to die...but in opposite, you're invincible if you can use your weapons well.
New City's Look. These objects have been added to the city: Statue of Liberty - this awesome NY's statue has moved to Liberty City. You can find it on new island near the Kenji's casino (it's even marked on radar), so you must use a boat to get there. There are some useful historical and technical information on the statue's pedestal. If you want to see all of Liberty City from a birds-eye view, use the stairs to get into the statue's head or torch. The idea of many players is finally in the game: jump ramp to Liberty Island. Just take a very fast car and try to be accurate in targeting the ramp. If you go the wrong speed or direction, and you won't land by the Statue of Liberty...you will fall into the water. If you'll start a new game, there will be a boat by the Liberty Island ready to get you back to Staunton. A new bridge is placed in Shoreside Vale and it's very useful, because it connects your hideout to the main road near the Francis Int. Airport. If you use Yakuza Toyota Supra Veilside, you can get to Staunton from Shoreside in a few seconds.
The mod also includes new in-game menus and loading screens; in-game texts changed to fit the RGTA; new billboards, posters and advertisements all over Liberty City; water has got a new color; all trees have been changed to beautiful palms; grey rocks/cliffs are now beige like in Greece; the roads look more modern; the pipes in the water have been deleted; you can travel by boat everywhere you want; nail boxes belongs to Euro Express; new helicopters at airport; new pager by CityGear; new crosshairs for rocket launcher and sniper rifle; default ugly radar is now color and very detailed: roads are white, buildings are orange, grass is green, water is blue and places of interest are purple.
